  • The disease Yersinia Pestis was the cause of the Black Death, which peaked in Europe around 1350, killing between 30% and 60% of the continent's population in a few years. What if some new strain of the disease mutated upon entering Europe (such as the imaginary Yersinia Pestis Atra subspecies which is capable of killing over 90% of the European population)? European society would all but collapse, likely regressing to a much less advanced state.

This would mean that there would be no European empires, so non-European cultures could continue undisturbed by European imperialism. Europe itself may become a dominion of some foreign empire (such as the Ottoman Empire).

Given the state of technological development across the rest of the world at the time, it may be necessary to move the 'modern day' of such an alternate history further into the future (probably by a few hundred years) in order to allow time for modern technology to be developed (such a world would not have the benefit of the European Enlightenment). Also, because other cultures will be subject to different cultural pressures and ways of thinking than Europeans, technology will probably take a remarkably different path, with different scientific fields potentially being dramatically more or less advanced than in the real world.

Concerning the above, we will have to be especially careful in deciding how technology will pan out in this alternate history, in order to prevent different users from developing different combinations of technologies for different regions (which then end up being incompatible with each other) in some sort of disorganised free-for-all.

  • I've made a new section on the main page which displays the 3 latest admin blog posts. For it to work, each of your blog posts has to have the "Admin blogs" category on it. So... yeah. Just letting you know.

  • Another way that the British Empire could have sided with the CSA during the American Civil War is as a result of the Trent Affair; in the real world the diplomatic crisis was resolved (another save by Abraham Lincoln), but if the crisis had escalated, it could have led to official diplomatic recognition of the CSA as a sovereign state and war between Great Britain and the USA.

As a side note, this was the battle flag of the CSA, this was the flag of their navy. The national flag of the CSA was actually this.

    • To quote the Doctor:

"Everything comes to an end. Everything dies."

(Least, I think that's the quote, from The End of the World)
